Starships
In this game, even though starships are a motive of transportation between planets in the galaxy of Star Wars they operate a little bit different than regular vehicles. Starships are still a resource much similar to vehicles, so they get their own aspects but they have their own set of skills that stacks with the characters that are operating a station that’s on the starship. Given that the players are still required to make a resource roll to see what kind of starship they can purchase, however some starships have additional cost the players may not want to pay. The additional cost is in group refresh of the characters. This is so to simulate that starships aren’t easy to come by as they are scaled higher than people and even vehicles granted them a bonus when attacking smaller objects than themselves. In this section we are going to show the difference in starships versus vehicles.
Starship Name & Description
Similar to vehicles, the first step for starships is coming up with a name and description if the GM doesn’t have one in mind. The description similar to characters can be anything that relates to the group of players, not necessarily their characters but a reference for the players instead. Once this is done move onto the next step to figure out which type of vehicle you will be getting, which the group of players should have an idea prior ahead of time.
Starship Type
This step is very important as the type of starship may have certain size, number of aspects, skill points, stunts, refresh, consequences, squadron, value and additional cost. The table reflects each type of starship with all of the categories just previous mention with the value under each.
Starship Type & Stats Chart
• Land Vehicle count as normal vehicles and must follow the normal vehicle rules.
Once the type of starship was selected, compare it across the table to see the size of the starship, how many aspects, and skill points it gets, how many free stunts and how much refresh with the number of consequences. Once you see what you like than check the resource difficulty and additional cost to see if the players would like to pay it
Starship Size
The starship size value represents how big the starship is in contrast to other ships, vehicles and even people. People are represented by a size of 0, while all vehicles a size of 1. This is considering the scale, and scale plays an important role as it can deliver bonuses and penalties with each and every roll for both GMs and Players groups. The rule of scale works like this, you take the starship size that you are in such as Freighter has a size of 4, and then let’s say some TIE Fighters are attacking which they are a size of 3. The difference is the TIE Fighters are smaller by 1 difference in scale. The next step once you have the difference you need to figure out how to apply it. It is simple to apply the difference; only three factors come into play during this step, weapons, maneuver, and shields skills of the starship. The rule to remember is the bigger the ship, the slower and harder to maneuver in battle so the 1 is applied a negative during that roll. Smaller ships get to apply the 1 different as a positive. The smaller ships apply the 1 as a negative for weapons and shields because it’s also weaker fire power and defense, while the larger ship applies the 1 as a positive for the weapons and shields as it is bigger. That is how you apply the scale in game play. The table below shows the mechanic simplified.

Starship Aspects
The next category that is important to starships is the aspects of the starships. Aspects are very important much like vehicles, however starship doesn’t get aspects based on their condition. They get a certain number of aspects based on their size. The condition of the starship doesn’t matter when it comes to receiving aspects. That doesn’t mean you received a starship in new condition and that doesn’t mean it has an active hyperdrive. It just means the aspects slots you receive should reflect the condition if the players agree on the aspects. Similar to characters and vehicles starships should have the following aspects, a High Concept, Trouble/Flaw and any aspects above two is listed as free aspects. For more information on aspects please refer to FATE Core book in the Aspect chapter. Each starship can have two additional aspects above the number listed on the table by purchasing an aspect slot. In order to access an additional aspect slot, the players must roll resource skill versus Legendary (+8) and sacrifice 1 refresh from one of the characters.
Starship Skills
Similar to characters starships have a separate set of skills that are used in combination with character’s skills that are operating the starships. Starships have the following skills, weapons, maneuver, shields, and systems. Each skill covers a certain function the starships can perform.
Starship Skills
• Weapons are the attack power of the starship and combines with the Shoot skill of a character using the weapons station.
• Maneuver is the speed and agility of the starship and combines with the Pilot skill of a character using the pilot’s station.
• Shields are additional consequences the starship could take before suffering more damage.
• Systems is used to set coordinates for hyper drive jumps, systems repair whether is mechanical or computer base and is used to create an advantage or overcome situations. This skill combines with the character lore skill that is operating the systems station.
It is up to the players as a group to see how the skill points are distributed among the skills. There are a number of skill points based on the type of starship you have selected. Example a Freighter gets 6 skill points to distribute among the four skills. Once more it’s up to group to decide how the skill points are distributed, if any of the skills are represented by a 0, that could mean the skill they are using doesn’t have the most updated version or is not nearly as powerful or may not exist on the starship. Anything that represents a pacific weapon, starship accessory or shields is either by the starships aspects or could be a stunt which is covered in the next section.
Skill values can be improved on but the cost is 1 character refresh to improve with a resource roll similar to purchasing an aspect slot only the difficulty is similar to weapons value of the weapon that is declared in stunts.
Starship Stunts
The next category we will cover in this section is the starship stunts and how many they get. The number under stunts represents how many free stunts the starship gets without spending any refresh, and if they want extra stunts beyond the free stunt they must spend a starships refresh for any additional stunts. These stunts usually represent an ability the ship can do such as special weapons, shields, hyperdrive, maneuvers and so on, similar to the stunts that characters have in the game. For more information on stunts please see FATE Core book or the FATE Core toolkit for ideas on stunts.
Starships Refresh
Starships gain a certain number of refresh depending on type. Refresh is used for fate points that the starship would gain at the start of every session to use during the operation of the starship to power a stunt, invoke or compel aspects similar to characters. A starships refresh can be used to purchase additional stunts beyond the number of free stunts each starship type gets.
Starship Consequences
Starships similar to vehicles do not take any stress. Instead damage is represented by aspects and consequences before being taken out. Starships have a certain number of consequences listed under consequences such as Mild, Moderate, and Severe. Starships can take an Extreme consequence but then a character or characters must take damage too, example is if the weapons were destroyed then the weapons station would explode and hurt the character operating it.
Squadron
A single squadron is represented by ten star fighters (which is a complete mob), and some starships of certain types and sizes have squadrons which is ten star fighters times the number represented on the table and can be used to create an advantage against an enemy. Squadrons have a specific rule with the scale rule we already covered in a previous section. Star Fighters are Size 3 starships vessels of their type. For every two star fighters consider their size increased by 1, which would make any bonuses and penalties small of the scale rule. The highest it can go up is to size 8 for an entire mob. If any star fighters are destroyed they are consider being smaller size by 1 for every two star fighters that are destroyed which would bring back the scale rule or turn the tables in favor of the enemy.
Resource Difficulty and Additional Cost
A starship still has a resource difficulty to see if the character has the necessary resources to have the starship. Some starships based on type and size has additional costs. The additional costs are refresh from a character that is in play and not the refresh from the starship. This would make starships difficult to own and hard to acquire. This category is by far the easiest to explain as the character would have roll resources skill and pay any additional costs that maybe required.
Recovering Starship Consequences
In order for a starship to recover from any consequences, the players can roll their Lore skill in combination with the starship’s Systems skill to help recover the consequences or begin recovering the starship from the consequences.
Improving Starships
This section explains what can be done to improve a starship at each milestone.
• At Minor Milestone, you may change one of the starships aspects or stunts. These don’t follow the normal milestone for characters. You can change the high concept of the starship if you so desire.
• At Significant Milestone, you may reassign the point value of the skills.
